Nagaland khadi cluster to sponsor 250 beneficiaries

Dimapur, July 1 (DIPR): The third Cluster Development Coordination Group (CDCG) under the programme Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) for Nagaland Khadi cluster meeting was held at Deputy Commissioner’s Office Dimapur on Tuesday,  June 30.

Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur Maongwati Aier who is also the chairman for District Khadi Cluster Committee in his chairman’s remark stated that Nagaland state is a unique state where traditional industries had been in existence for the past hundred years. He opined that Nagaland state does not require mega industries for its survival but it requires small traditional industries basing on its geographical location and its climate. He said that the state is producing both Eri and Muga in huge quantities due to favourable climatic conditions. He however lamented that the real farmers are not benefiting from their rich harvest as the raw materials go outside the state in cheaper rate for final production which are sold at high rates in the market.

The DC said that the state possesses rich human resources with a high percentage of educated population but that human resources are not used in the right way. He appealed to the Khadi Industries unit to play an important role for regeneration of traditional industries like Khadi industries to tap the rich human resources. He also urged the Khadi & Village Industries Commission to explore  traditional village industries in Nagaland in a big way so that indigenous products can be showcased in trade fairs throughout the country as well as abroad whereby the state will have high economic returns for the state revenue. However, he also opined that traditional industries like Khadi units are very expensive for consumers and therefore these traditional industries need to be upgraded with more advanced technology for mass production while being consumer friendly and sustainable.

During the presentation of the performance status and rectification and presentation of action plan for the year 2009-10 by Cluster Development Entrepreneur Lalit Kumar Jain stated that the implementing agency will purchase 250 six Spindle Chakras and looms for the 250 beneficiaries where Khadi & Village Industries Commission will contribute 75 percent of the component and 25 percent will be borne by the implementing agency. The beneficiaries will undergo training in weaving and spinning looms in batch wise.

The meeting was attended by officials of Khadi & Village Industries commission, Implementing Agency, Nagaland Khadi & Village Industries Sangh Dimapur, Technical Agency Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship Guwahati and some beneficiaries from Dimapur district.
