Nagaland Legislative Assembly is the highest institution of Democracy as far as Nagaland State is concerned, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio maintained today.

Taking part in the last day of the ongoing budget session of NLA which ended at 8:40 pm on Monday, Rio said: “This is indeed the temple of democracy for all the citizens. This floor of this August House is sacred; and all who enter into this house carries the voice and aspirations of the people.”

“Every Member here is also known as a Lawmaker as it is only this House which can make and unmake laws.”

Rio in his reply after general discussion on budget conveyed sincere appreciation to all the members who have participated in the deliberations.

“I am of the firm opinion that such healthy debates and deliberations will contribute towards strengthening of democracy and will surely improve the overall governance of the state,” Rio said.

Rio said that the NLA is perhaps one of the most disciplined Houses anywhere in the country and in the past decades, our predecessors have left behind a rich legacy of discipline, decorum and the highest standards of parliamentary conduct which we and the future generations can be proud.

He said this House has given to the Naga people, and to the Nation, some of the most exemplary leaders who have served the state and the nation with dignity and commitment.

He said the members of NLA have high standards and benchmarks to emulate and every manner of “our conduct is responsible to the people who we represent. This is the House of the people and our voice reflects the aspirations of all the citizens in our State.”

He said the government has taken note of all the suggestions and constructive inputs that have come from both ruling and opposition benches and positive follow action would be taken.

Rio assured each and every citizen of the State that every member of the PDA Government will continuously strive to carry out responsibilities in an effective manner.

Team Nagaland

“I also take the opportunity to call the citizens of Nagaland that making a new Nagaland and bringing positive change is not only the State Government’s responsibility but also the responsibility of the whole State and its citizens. It begins with a constructive opposition as it is said that a Government is only as good as the opposition,” he said.

We need a change in mindsets. We need to shift away from a negative attitude and begin to create an environment of positivity, he said adding a “new Nagaland” is possible when we all join hands and collectively face the challenges as “team Nagaland”.

Let us join hands and work for the people, let us create a better tomorrow for our children and let us all make Nagaland known to the world for all the right reasons, Rio said.
