After a gap of 42 years, Nagaland finally lifted the U-17 Subroto Cup 2022 after defeating Chandigarh 1-0 in the finals, played today in Delhi.

The Pilgrim Higher Secondary School (PHSS) Dimapur representing the Nagaland state defeated Government Model Higher Secondary School, Sector 37, (GMHSS-37), Chandigarh by a solidarity goal to lift the prestigious 61st Subroto Cup International Football Tournament for U-17 boys played at Delhi’s Ambedkar Stadium on Thursday evening.

In a thrilling final match, it was Setungchim who made the difference again scoring from a header during the extra time to help Nagaland team break the jinx and lift the trophy.

It was a gap of 42 years when Government High School, Dimapur, was declared joint winners along with Ibemcha Higher Secondary School, Manipur in 1980 due to unavoidable circumstances.

The champions Nagaland received a cash prize of Rs 3,50,000 including trophy and citations.

The team was led by Mughato Aye as the coach and Akhihito Zhimo as the manager.

Nagaland team on their way to final beat Kejriwal High School, Bihar 3-1, outclass Fountainhead School, Surat 16-0 and edge pass Banpother Bengenabari HSS, Assam 2-0 in the league matches to top the Pool G.

It defeated St Anthony’s High School, Meghalaya in quarters via penalty shootout 5-4. In their semifinal match, they defeated CT Higher Secondary School Manipur, 3-1 to make it into the final round.

Nagaland Youth Resources & Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha congratulated the team for winning the prestigious trophy. “Our boys from Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, Dimapur representing Nagaland showed their quality to be champions, their teamwork and effort have attributed to the success of the trophy,” he said. It is a red letter day for Nagaland football to win such a prestigious tournament, he said and also hoped the Nagaland can build these young players for future prospect and continue to bring laurel to the state of Nagaland.
