Nagaland Lok Adalat resolves 219 cases, settles Rs 2.38 crore

District Legal Services Authorities under Nagaland State Legal Services Authorities during the 2nd Quarterly National Lok Adalat 2025 conducted across the state on May 10.

Bank & Civil cases top Lok Adalat settlements in state 

Kohima, May 10 (MExN): The 2nd Quarterly National Lok Adalat 2025 conducted across the state by District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) under the aegis of Nagaland State Legal Services Authorities (NSLSA) disposed off a total of 219 cases with a settlement amount of Rs 2,38,99,111 (Rupees two crore, thirty-eight lakh, nifty nine thousand, one hundred eleven). 

The NSLSA press statement reported that a total of 290 cases were taken up for settlement during the lok adalat sessions held on May 10. Out of the disposed cases, 192 were at pre-litigation stage and 27 cases were under pending stage. The cases included mostly bank loan recovery cases, Telephone bills, MACT and other consumer and civil cases. 
National Lok Adalat (NLA) also known as the ‘People's Court’ is an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) which is aimed at reducing court backlog, providing access to justice for marginalized communities, and ensuring that disputes are resolved in a timely and cost-effective manner. 

Wokha

It may be mentioned that in the year 2024, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) recognised Nagaland SLSA for achieving highest disposal percentage of pending cases in the 1st NLA, 2024 held on March 9. Also the performance of Nagaland SLSA in 2nd and 4th NLA showed highest improvement in disposal percentage. 

In Zunheboto, three pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up and 02 were disposed of with the total settlement amount of Rs 1038219. Twenty four matters of pre-litigation bank recovery cases of SBI (Chozuba) and NStCB (Phek, Pfutsero and Chozuba) respectively were taken up in Phek and disposed of with a settlement amount of Rs 2604401.

In Kohima, a total of 12 bank recovery cases, 13 Telephone bill recovery cases and nine MS case were put up before the Lok Adalat whereby 13 Telephone bill recovery case, three MS and 19 bank recovery cases was taken up and settled. The total outstanding amount of Rs 22369327 was settled with Rs 2304002 through NLA. Altogether 10 Banks and 2 telephone office participated in the Lok Adalat.

SBI Kiphire branch and Co-operative Bank participated in the NLA at Kiphire. The session took up 10 bank loan recovery cases and settled eight bank loan cases with a settlement amount of Rs 570370.

Zunheboto

Longleng DLSA held the Lok Adalat with SBI Longleng. A total of four cases of bank loan recovery were taken up and disposed off with the settlement amount of Rs 84157. Mokokchung DLSA took 11 cases of bank loan recovery and disposed off with a settlement amount of Rs 986735. In Peren a total of four pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up and successfully disposed of with a settlement amount of Rs 976000.

Mon DLSA took five pre-litigation and 17 pending trial bank recovery cases, one pre-litigation and two pending trial bank recovery cases with disposed off with the settlement amount of Rs 839481.

In Tuensang altogether 10 bank recovery cases were taken up and seven bank cases were disposed of with a settlement amount of Rs 1497346. In Wokha, six pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up and disposed off. The Total settlement amount is Rs 432500. 

While in Dimapur, a total of 133 pre-litigation cases were taken up, out of which 93 was disposed off and 22 pending trial cases was disposed. The total settlement amount is Rs 12565900.
