DIMAPUR, JULY 21 (MExN): Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has raised the demand for restoration of passenger train services to Tuli, urging the Ministry of Railways to revive the railway link and improve connectivity in the region.
Raising the issue under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, Jamir sought passenger train services, along with a parcel van, between Dimapur and Tuli, stating that it would benefit daily commuters, traders, students and the general public.
He also called for the extension of broad gauge train services from Guwahati to Tuli to improve connectivity for Nagaland and Upper Assam.
According to a press statement issued on July 21, Jamir informed the House that the Tuli railway line had operated on metre gauge since the 1990s and was upgraded to broad gauge in 2000. A passenger trial run between Tuli and Mariani was successfully conducted in 2007, but regular passenger services were not subsequently introduced, it stated.
The MP further highlighted the existing goods train service between Amguri and Tuli, which he said generated nearly Rs 30 crore in revenue during the last financial year. He cited the earnings as an indication of the commercial viability and operational feasibility of the route.
Highlighting what he termed as strong public demand for restoration of passenger services, Jamir assured the Ministry of Railways of public support for the initiative and called for early action.
Jamir maintained that restoring the service would improve regional connectivity and support economic activity in the area.
