Nagaland might soon get a State Youth Affairs Council, a body that will assist the government in handling youth related issues in the state. Nagaland Minister for Youth Resources and Sports, Merentoshi R Jamir has disclosed that preliminary preparations have already been made towards this effect. Besides this, a district level Youth Affairs Council is also being promulgated. He related this to members of the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem here this evening at his private residence. The young minister invited leaders of the Mokokchung town based youth organization to “share ideas and opinions” as part of his ongoing tour in his constituency.

In the course of the interaction with the youth leaders, the Minister mentioned several of his proposals, including construction of multi-disciplinary sports stadiums in each of the district headquarters. He cited his proposal for construction of two sports academies in Mokokchung and Tuensang and informed that he would be going to Delhi later this month with the proposals.

The Minister lamented that the Youth Affairs department has remained largely quiescent over the years. “Apart from hosting the Youth Festival, there is not any other activity,” he said of the department. He however asserted that the Sports department has been doing fairly well, although much remains to be done. He observed that Nagaland lacks “sports skill development” programmes in spite of some sporting infrastructures at place.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) while expressing gratitude to the Minister for his invitation expressed their fullest cooperation in every possible way. Among other suggestions and ideas, the MTLT representatives encouraged the Minister to work ceaselessly for the welfare of the youth in Nagaland. They stated that the department of Youth Resources and Sports has been “belittled” over the years, adding that the scope of this department is limitless.
