Dimapur, August 15 (MExN): S Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament from Nagaland, has been formally elected to the governing body of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, following a unanimous election in the Lok Sabha. His election fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of former MP Pradyut Bordoloi.
According to Lok Sabha Bulletin No. 5973, dated August 7, 2026, the election was held under the provisions of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956, pursuant to a motion adopted by the House on July 28, 2026. Initially, two nominations were received, but one candidate withdrew, leaving Jamir as the sole remaining nominee, equal to the number of vacancies and he was declared duly elected.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat communicated the election result to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on August 10, formalising his membership on the premier institute’s governing body.
Expressing gratitude to fellow MPs, Jamir said he would work constructively for the development of AIIMS Guwahati and the broader healthcare infrastructure in the Northeast. He emphasised the institute’s critical role in serving Assam and neighbouring states, and pledged to advocate for affordable, quality healthcare, improved medical education, advanced research facilities, and stronger health systems in the region.
As the Lok Sabha member from Nagaland, Jamir added that he would continue to raise regional issues and ensure the Northeast receives adequate attention in the national healthcare agenda. His election is seen as significant for the region, given AIIMS Guwahati’s status as a key tertiary-care and medical-education hub for the entire Northeast.
