Nagaland: National Science Day celebrates ‘Women in Science’

Dimapur, February 29 (MExN): National Science Day 2020 was observed across institutions in the state on February 28, with competitions, lectures, exhibitions etc, marking the day.


In St John College, Dimapur, Administrative Head, Peter Banks launched the competitions of the day with a message on the significance of scientific applications in our daily lives.


Students in the departments of Science and Humanities showcased various prototypes and models focused on sustainability of energy and reducing pollution in the environment.


Students of the Economics department displayed the effective ways of organic farming in ‘vermicompost’ using Ethiopian earthworms.


Students from the chemistry department displayed the working model of ‘Li-Fi’, a transmission of data using light experiment instead of Wi-Fi.


The exhibition also paid a tribute to the achievements made by Indians in the field of astronomy and mathematics. The department of zoology displayed practical effects of alcohol in human body, while the Botany department displayed commonly available medicinal plants.


Presentations were made on health awareness and literary competitions were also held to create awareness about the advantages and disadvantages of scientific discoveries, a press release from the college said.


In the essay competition titled ‘Women in Science’, Revina L Mech won the first position while Chonglikhum won the painting competition under the topic ‘Pollution’.


Srishti from BSc was adjudged as the best speaker in the debate ‘Scientific Development: A Boon or Doom?’
Nikita and Bhargava won the best exhibition with their demonstration on the ‘Effects of Alcohol’.


Group competitions were also held to encourage students to gain scientific knowledge about sustainability while grooming their soft skills.


In Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) Kohima, the day was observed at the college auditorium with Dr Kate Dandesh Kumar, Associate Professor as the speaker under the theme ‘Women in Science’.


The speaker spoke about the importance and role played by women in science. He also mentioned some important women in science, both national and international level and how women have taken over the field of science. After the speech, a short video clip was displayed on women achievers in science, Dr. Devanand Sinha, Principal informed in a press release on Saturday.


Chaired by Zuchano Ovung, the programme started with an invocation by Medovinuo followed by a brief introduction about “National Science Day” by Pushong. The Ecological Club members presented a special number and the event concluded with a prayer by Benjamin.


National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28 to commemorate discovery of the 'Raman Effect', which led to Indian scientist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman or CV Raman winning the Noble Prize in Physics in 1930. This year’s theme was ‘Women in Science.’
