Nagaland: News in Picture, 26 July 2021

The streets of Nagaland are not new to the menace of haphazard, unauthorized parking. In one such case, a randomly parked vehicle in the Naga Bazaar area in Kohima resulted in the obstruction of smooth flow of traffic on July 26. Several vehicles were reportedly stuck in the congestion along the narrow street. According to the New Motor Vehicle Act 2019, parking of vehicles in public places where it may cause obstruction, inconvenience, or puts other people in danger is subject to penalty. However, in many places, ignorance and ineffective implementation of the law have resulted in traffic and parking woes across the State. Authorities also need to take into account the rising number of vehicles and come up with an effective system to regulate such recurring issues. Some mechanisms like awareness drives, stricter rules and enforcement, congestion taxes etc could be taken into consideration. (Photo Courtesy: Nijilo Kent)
