Kohima, July 19 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Sunday directed all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to remain vigilant and activate their respective District Emergency Operations Centres following incessant rainfall that triggered landslides, flash floods and severe waterlogging across the State.
The order came amid reports of deaths and widespread damage caused by landslides and flash floods in Mon district, flooding in Tuli subdivision of Mokokchung district and landslides disrupting road connectivity in Shamator and other parts of the State.
The NSDMA directed district authorities to prioritise the safety of residents and evacuate people from severely waterlogged, low-lying and landslide-prone areas, including unstable embankments and riverbanks.
DDMAs were also instructed to assess the availability of essential commodities, including food, fuel and medicines, and ensure sufficient stocks during the emergency.
District authorities were directed to ensure communication systems remain operational and establish rapid communication channels wherever required. Coordinated response teams are also to be mobilised and kept on standby for any eventuality.
The NSDMA further directed the deployment of JCBs, excavators and earth-moving teams to clear debris and mudslides from blocked highways and arterial roads to maintain connectivity.
Authorities were asked to coordinate with the Power Department for the pre-emptive shutdown of electricity supply in submerged areas to prevent electrocution and restore power once the water recedes.
The public has been advised to avoid fishing, swimming or remaining near swollen streams, overflowing drains and riverbanks. People were also urged to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media to prevent unnecessary panic.
