Nagaland observes International Labour Day

Focuses on Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers scheme  

Dimapur, May 1 (MExN): International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some countries, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement, socialists, communists or anarchists. It occurs every year on May Day which is May 1st. In Nagaland, the day was observed across the districts under the aegis of respective district legal services authority.  

Kohima: The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) in collaboration with Labour department and District Administration SDO(C) Jakhama observed the day at SDO (C) Office, Jakhama.  

Speaking on Labour Rights, Avile Vitso, Assistant Labour Commissioner Nagaland, highlighted on labour rights such as payment of wages, safety of the workers, equal wages, maternity benefit, child labour, legal adoption, various schemes etc.  

She informed that to register as beneficiaries for Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers (NBOCW) scheme, the documents required are-two passport photograph, photocopy of the first page of the bank account Pass Book, photocopy of Aadhaar card, construction worker certificate from VCC/ Head GB/ Colony Chairman.  

Informing that the scheme is applicable for men and women, she said that beneficiaries of the scheme should be 18 to 58 years of age, while registration fee of Rs. 325/- will be charged for the first time and Rs. 300/- for yearly renewal. She informed that registered members may avail the following benefits against the NBOCW scheme--Rs. 1000/- as tools grant on registration, a student from LKG to class-10 can avail a scholarship of Rs. 300/- per month, a woman can avail Rs. 5000/- as maternity grant twice on child delivery, beneficiaries may also avail medical grant of Rs. 1000/- per day for the first 5 days and Rs. 200/- per day for other 10 subsequent days.  

She pointed out that beneficiaries are also entitled for pension benefit as and when he/she attains 60 years of age by regularly renewing yearly registration-- a sum of Rs. 3000/- per year will be granted to the beneficiaries as pension benefits against the scheme.  

The Assistant Commissioner further informed that beneficiaries are also entitled to get Rs. 30,000/- on his/her natural death; a sum of Rs. 75,000/- shall be compensated on accidental death. She said that this is subject to while on work-- A sum of Rs. 75,000/- shall be compensated on permanent disability of the beneficiaries.  

Speaking on Nagaland Village Council and Tribal acts, Customary Practices in Nagaland, Kekhriengulie Theunuo, Retainer Lawyer KDLSA highlighted on Nagaland jhum act and hierarchy of the customary Courts.  

Tuensang: Tuensang District Legal Services Authority (TDLSA) observed International Labour Day at CKS Hall. N. Kano, Judicial Magistrate 1st Class & Secretary TDLSA highlighted that there are 663 registered members, out of which 259 members renewed for the year 2017, 199 students received scholarship for the year 2016 and 239 students applied for scholarship this year. Under Tuensang District two family received death insurance. So far, PLVs of two (2) LACs ie, Noklak and Thonoknyu LACs are involved with the NGO in registering the workers from their respective area.  

Sharing on the importance of having Labour unions and Associations, Katovi, APP Tuensang encouraged the gathering to be equipped in order to improve the economy.  

Speaking on Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare schemes, Yimtsusangla, Retainer lawyer, TDLSA appraised that under this scheme the registered beneficiaries are entitled to get insurance cover, maternity benefits, grant for purchasing tools, and scholarships for the children.  

Speaking on NALSA Scheme of Legal Services to the Workers in Un-Organised Sector, Cheliam Khiamniungan, Master Trainer NSLSA, appreciated the contribution made by the labourers towards the development of the country’s economy, and also highlighted that legal services institutions exist to provide a link or bridge the gap between the concern departments and the labourers.  

Altogether 90 beneficiaries/Labourers along with the representatives from Social Welfare Department, Labour Department and Integrated Development Society (NGO) attended the programme.  

Zunheboto: Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority (ZDLSA) observed International Labour Day at District Court Complex, Zunheboto. Speaking as the resource person, Easter H. Yeptho, Panel lawyer ZDLSA emphasized on the celebration of International Labor day. The resource person also stressed that no job should be considered superior or inferior, as every job that is dutifully done with honesty and sincerity deserves appreciation.  

Introduction and keynote address was delivered by Atoka Achumi, JMFC and Secretary ZDLSA, while District & Session Judge Cum Chairman ZDLSA delivered a short speech on the Significance of International Labor Day.  

Phek: On the occasion of International Labour Day, Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) felicitated traffic personnel, Nenkupe Meruh at ADC Pfutsero conference hall. SDPO Pfutsero and staff, OC Pfutsero, members from Kalos society, DBs and public leaders of Pfutsero attended the programme.  

Mon: Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) also observed International Labour Day at Government Higher Secondary School Mon ‘D’.
