Nagaland observes National Education Day

Nagaland today observed National Education Day in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India.  

In the state capital Kohima, the education degree holders of Nagaland observed the day at Ura College of Teacher Education.  

Delivering keynote address, Dr. Zavise Rume said National Education Day is an annual observance in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, who served from August 15, 1947 until February 2, 1958.  

The objective of celebrating National Education Day is to strengthen educational institutions and to raise the quality of education to greater heights.  

The day provides a platform to remember Maulana Azad’s contribution in laying the foundations of the education system in an independent India as well as to evaluate current performance in this field.  

Touching on educare, (Dr) Fr. Peter Salew, SDB, Parish Priest, Christ King Church Kohima village said “educare” means to bring up, to rise, and to nourish, to train or mould. “The child has to be brought up like a plant in the garden by the teacher. His potentialities should be developed with proper care and nourishment,” he said. He added that educare offers youth development programmes to help children realize their full potential and succeed in life. He quoted Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  

Also speaking on the occasion, John Lohe, (Retd) State Project Director, SSA urged the teachers to be agent of change in the education system. He said that education planning should start from the grassroots level, adding that the primary level should be given due importance. Lohe also urged the teachers to focus on improving education system.  

Nagaland Education Association formed

The education degree holders of Nagaland during the observance of National Education Day here today unanimously formed an association under the name ‘Nagaland Education Association.’  

The objective of the Association is to provide a platform for education degree holders to safeguard the interest of educationist and educators, provide leadership in education, promote professionalism in education, to extend professional help towards improvement of quality in education and policy making process, promote linkages with institutions, agencies, department related to education etc.  

The office bearers of the Association for the tenure 2016-19 are: president- Zavise Rume, vice president- Kevizakielie Suokhrie, general secretary- Dr. Bweyhunle Khing, joint secretary- Sanjay Sinha, treasurer- Markangla Jamir and information & publicity secretary- Viseizolie Yashü.

Khalong Ao- Retd director, higher education, Dr. Lungsang Zeliang- HoD, Education department, Nagaland University, John Lohe- Retd joint director, school education, (Dr). Fr. Constitution drafting committee members are Ikali Chishi, Jievitho Nyuwi and Neizekhonuo Liezietsu.  

'Quality is required in educational set up'

Pfütsero, November 11 (MExN): Tewelhi Medo Tyrannus Hr Sec School, Pfütsero celebrated National Education Day on November 11. The celebration began with a song dedicated to the educators all over the country. In his greeting message, Principal Reynald Pyngrope thanked the students of Class XII for organizing the event and said that that the development and growth of a country totally depends on the citizens of the country. Further, he spoke about the students of today being educated but having no quality. “Quality is required in educational set up if we want our society, state and country to progress. Moreover, this celebration will not have its meaning if all of you did not give importance in your studies," he stated
