Nagaland: Orgs demand SIT probe for ‘custodial death’ of Naga youth in Assam

Kohima, August 27 (MExN): The Leader of NPF Legislature Party & Co-Chairman of UDA Government Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu (MLA) has also vehemently condemned the alleged custodial death of a Naga youth in Assam’s Sivasagar district on August 21.

In a press statement Azo said, it was alleged that the Naga youth identified as Henveih Phom was arrested by the Assam police on August 16 at Anaki jurisdiction (Nagaland) while on his way to Gelekey, Assam and was remanded into Sivasagar district jail. It was learnt that the deceased was physically tortured by the police personnel while he was under their custody and said to have succumbed to the injuries after five days of his arrest.

“I would like to question our counterpart Assam Government particularly, the law enforcing agencies that when our own neighbour is not safe in the hands of our own security personnel then it will break the trust of brotherhood between the two peace loving states,” Azo stated in a press release.

Azo has appealed to “our counterpart Assam Government to immediately set up a ‘Special Investigative Team’ and with utmost seriousness probe the case without any biasness and deliver justice to the victim’s family at the earliest possible time.”

The Phomla Hoichem (apex Phom women organisation) has vehemently condemned the alleged custodial death of Henveih Phom of Anaki ‘C' village in Sivasagar jail, Assam.

The Phomla Hoichem alleged that “It is now very cleared that the victim was mercilessly tortured and brutally beaten to dead by the Assam police inside the jail” and therefore, demanded the competent authority to immediately set up Special Investigation Committee and delivered justice at the earliest. “The Phomla Hoichem will continue to fight till justice is delivered to the departed soul,” it stated while conveying condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for departed soul to rest in peace.

The Anaki Phom Citizens’ Council (APCC) has expressed gratitude to all the individuals, organizations and well wishers who have extended and are still extending solidarity and unwavering support to the cause of fight for justice to be served for the alleged custodial death of Henveih Phom at District Jail, Sibsagar, Assam. 

The APCC claimed that he was physically tortured to dead by the Assam Police personnel while he was under their custody. It reiterated that APCC shall “stand firm till justice is delivered. We invite all right thinking citizens to extend your support for this cause.”

The Phom Union Kohima (PUK) in its condemnation stated it is disturbing to know that the “torture and brutality inflicted on the person leading to his death was committed by none other than the law keeper themselves.” The union stated that “The crime committed is an absolute violation of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India and abuse of human rights.” PUK has also appeal the competent authority to take legal action against the culprits and deliver justice at the earliest. 

The Pongren Students’ Union (PSU) has also condemned the incident of the alleged “brutal beating and physical torture.” It stated that the “heedless behaviour and savagery of the personnel cannot be justified in any manner.”

PSU stated that the inhuman an irresponsible act by the law keeping force is intolerable and unacceptable which is a matter of disgrace to the constitution of the country. 

“We hope that the concerned authority will deliver justice at the earliest so that the pain and trauma of the victim and his family can be assuage with the deliverance of justice as such action has no place in today's civilized society,” it added. 

The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) stated that the security personnel who were “supposed to protect the citizen of the country has completely failed, which undermines and pays no heed to the fundamental rights of the citizens as enshrined in the Constitution of India and International Inman Rights Law.” In its condemnation note, USSC stated that the inhuman and irresponsible act by the law abiding force is intolerable and unaccepted which is a matter of disgrace to the constitution of the country.

The conference has asserted that the personnel who were involved in the vicious act towards its citizen are to be brought to justice with immediate effect as such action has no place in today’s civilized society. 

The USSC in support of ENSF demand has appealed to the competent authority to immediately constitute the Special Investigation Team and enquire into the mysterious death of Henveih Phom and to ensure that timely justice is delivered by booking the perpetrators under the relevant section of the law.
