Nagaland pledges to stop plastic usage

The citizens of Nagaland state today took pledge not to use plastics on the occasion of state wide mass Shramdaan on plastic wastes, that marked Swachhata Hi Seva and 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.


In the state capital Kohima, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio administered the pledge not to use plastics here at Old NST station.  He also led the mass collection of plastics waste.


The citizens took pledge to keep plastic waste separate in order to reuse, recycle and minimize the use of plastic.


It also pledged to discourage the use of all single-use plastics at all places and on all occasions, to use the alternatives in place of plastic, to educate family and friends about the hazards of plastic and to make “Swachhata Hi Seva- Cleanliness is service” a way of life.


Earlier, Rio in his address, appreciated Prime Minister’s appeal to keep the environment clean and to do way with one time plastic use particularly in the urban areas and make India a plastic free country.


Rio urged the town dwellers, starting with Kohima and Dimapur to show the way by keeping the city clean.


This time, he said that before Hornbill festival come, the government is trying its best to improve roads and drainage system.


He said the concerned department will be working very hard in all the sectors.


Seeking the support of the public and stakeholders, he said “We have to participate, take commitment and ownership.”


Rio urged that anybody, particularly who live along the roads should be more careful in keeping the area clean.


He wanted to see that the houses/buildings are properly painted to beautify the town.


He expressed dismay over the grasses growing on roof corner and wires, water cable, video cable, which were all around.


Rio also urged the commercial establishments to put light bulb on their signboards and also ensure that the street lights are functional.


Rio sad that unless the public co-operates and works together hand-in-hand with the government “our dream of a better Nagaland will never see reality.”
