The Nagaland Police today organized a National flag relay cum group run as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebration in commemoration of 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. The event started from Nagaland Civil Secretariat plaza and culminated at PHQ, Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion, Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP) T John Longkumer said, “Through today’s event we pay homage to the Indian freedom fighters. We pay our respects to the personal sacrifices made by them, the spirit of unity which they stood for. Above all we salute their love for the nation.”
The DGP said that the 200 years of colonial rule witnessed the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters all over the nation. Nagaland is no exception. Haipou Jadonang of Nagaland organized an army called the Riphen with the goal of emancipating the Naga people from the clutches of the British colonial rule on 19 February 1931. At the age of 26 years, he was arrested by British on charges of sedition and hanged. Thus becoming, a martyr in India’s struggle for independence, DGP said.
Safeguard gifts of freedom fighters
“Today as we pay homage to the freedom fighters, we realize that they sacrificed their all to secure a future for all of us. A future of hope, prosperity and unity,” Longkumer said adding that the need for unity is more apparent now when “we not only combat divisive forces which want to tear us to pieces but also as we combat a common enemy which wants to devour us whole.”
Meanwhile, he challenged the people to dedicate themselves to unitedly safeguard the gifts of the freedom fighters and to secure the nectar of freedom for the generations to come.
Longkumer also wished all citizens of the nation a year of good health, peace, development and prosperity.
