A constable of the Nagaland Police, posted in Longleng, was arrested on September 3 for the alleged rape of a woman. The accused was taken into custody by the Longleng police after he was apprehended by locals a few hours after he allegedly raped an 18-year old woman. The incident happened at Nangmah, a farming area, located about 7km from Tamlu town.
According to police sources, the accused, aged around 30-35 years, whose name was not revealed, was an unarmed branch constable, posted at Tamlu Police Station. At the time of the alleged incident, he was on duty assigned as a local police ‘guide’ from the Tamlu PS for an NAP (IR) unit deployed to the Nangmah area for securing the construction of the Merangkong-Tamlu-Mon road project.
The sexual assault reportedly occurred sometime before noon subsequent to which the victim alerted local residents, who apprehended and handed over the accused constable to the police. The case was registered at Women Police Station, Longleng.
It was still to be corroborated but the sources informed that the accused admitted to sexually assaulting the woman. The report of the medical examiner was pending.
