Dimapur, March 5 (MExN): Responding to the threat against Kiphire police and administrative officials by the Western Yimchunger Hoho and the Pungro Public Forum following allegations of torture, Nagaland Police has cautioned that such threats to police officers tantamount to criminal intimidation and undue interference in the process of investigation will not be tolerated.
The office of the Director General of Police, Nagaland today issued a response with a strong caution particularly to the WYH and the PPF: “The PHQ hereby wants to make it clear to the public as well as the two NGOs that such threats to police officers in the discharge of their legitimate duty amounts to criminal intimidation to public servants and undue interference in the investigation with a view to obstruct the path of justice and will not be tolerated and those persons/NGOs will be liable as per law and action taken against them”.
The police department reminded that the officers are engaged in investigation of a very heinous case of multiple murder of a family of seven persons at Zangor village, under Pungro in Kiphire. “The SDPO and the OC PS as well as other police officials involved are acting in their official capacity as police officers and have no personal interest in the investigation” the police reminded.
In regard to the allegation of third-degree torture of the six person accused of the murder, specifically, the state police clarified that it condones no physical torture on any detainees. The six persons were physically examined on March 3, 2007, at Dimapur as also their medical records.
These did not mention of use of any force on them and only at the time when they were apprehended. The medical reports further did not indicate and sign of physical torture, the police clarified. While appreciating the prompt medical care the clarification also mentioned that one of the accused Tia Yimchunger (24) was admitted to Dimapur Civil Hospital on February 28 but for a high BP reading of 190/120 mg. while appreciating the attention given to the case, the police remind that all efforts are being rendered to bring the culprits to book, which, it added, is their (police) bounden duty.
