
DIMAPUR, APRIL 25 (MExN): Nagaland DGP, Rupin Sharma on Tuesday introspected that Nagaland Police has a ‘stellar image of professionalism’ while performing duties outside the state but the same zeal was not reflected which performing duties within the state.
The DGP stated this while addressing the 51st General Conference of the Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) at the Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chumukedima on Tuesday as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, the DGP called for introspection of professional standards of the Nagaland Police wherein, over the years, the population of the state has increased many folds; the cases of economic offences increased; the number of vehicles increased; new crimes emerging rapidly; but, the total number of cases annually registered has remained the same. He stated that the increase in case registration should not be seen as a breakdown of law and order but, greater public trust on the police.
He also challenged the officers that before we make demands to the government, we must first introspect what we are giving back. He spoke on various issues of the Police administration and matters relating to the welfare of the subordinates. He also encouraged the officers to take criticism as a positive impetus for change and called upon the NPS officers to deliberate, suggest and assist the PHQ on how to improve Nagaland Police and work together for the career progression of the officers.
The DGP meanwhile acknowledged the importance of the NPS officers in the governance of the state and emphasized on making Nagaland Police and professionalism as their primary identity.
NPSA president, Teisovise Metha, in his address highlighted the importance of the role played by the NPS officer in the governance of the state. He also spoke on the various issues plaguing the NPS cadre and the serious problem of stagnation in the career progression of its officers leading to low morale and motivations. These problems, he highlighted is not only a problem of the NPS Officers but a problem for the department and the state government as well.
During the business session, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur Kevithuho Sophie, addressed the gathering where he shared his experiences and encouraged the younger generation of police officers on the way forward. He also encouraged the officers to approach the changing times by changing the way of policing and, the need for more proactive policing; importance to cybercrimes and also, correct on the use of Social Media platforms by members of the Police Department.
The House discussed on various agendas and also used the occasion as an opportunity of self-appraisal and self- introspection of the member officers. The General Conference also installed a new team of officer bearers of the NPSA for a term of two years. The team will be led by Khrodi Rhetso as president, Joseph Thongliu as vice president, Relo T Aye as general secretary, Tiajungla Ao, Manom Wallim and P Philip Yanthan as joint secretaries and Ben Longkumer as treasurer.
