There are a total of 5167 Work-Charged employees in the Nagaland Public Works Department (NPWD), the State Assembly was informed on August 5.
The information was given Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and Minister in charge of Home and PWD (Road & Bridges) in reply to an unstarred question from Kuzholuzo Nienu, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) representative from Phek.
Division-wise, the highest Work-Charged employees were in PWD (Road & Bridges) at 4031, followed by PWD (Housing) at 1006.
In PWD (Highway), there were 130 ‘Work-Charged labours,’ the Minister reply added.
According to NPWD website, the department is “one of the major development departments in existence prior to the formation of Nagaland State.”
When Nagaland was declared as a State under the Indian Union December 1, 1963, a full-fledged department known as the Nagaland Public Works Department (NPWD) headed by a Chief Engineer came into being for “ the implementation of all infrastructure development works like; Civil works, Electricity and Water Supply.”
Later on, Electricity and Water Supply Wings were bifurcated as separate departments and NPWD was left with works of Road & Bridges and Housing. The Mechanical Engineering Department, Planning & Design Cell and Police Engineering Project (PEP) were added over the years, informed an Annual Administrative Report of the department.
Presently, the Engineer-in-Chief NPWD head the Department and also to co-ordinate with the 5 (five) Chief Engineers and a Chief Architect - Chief Engineers in PWD (Roads &Bridges), PWD (Housing), Mechanical, National Highways, Police Engineering Project and Chief Architect (Planning & Design).
Meanwhile, in another query on August 3, Patton informed that there are 1,682 Sectional Assistants under the Roads & Bridges department in the State. Out of this, 1452 are regular employees while 230 are work charge employees. In the Housing department, there are 589 Sectional Assistants, out of which 495 are regular employees and 94 work charge.
