Nagaland ranks lowest in timely birth registrations, near bottom in death records

Nagaland has recorded the lowest percentage of birth registrations completed within the legally prescribed time limit of 21 days across India, according to the latest Civil Registration System (CRS) data.

In 2022, only 2.1 % of the total 80813 births in the state were registered within 21 days, amounting to just 1709 timely entries. 

The remaining cases were registered late, with over 74281 births recorded after one year, highlighting significant delays and possible gaps in civil documentation.

However, the latest figures show an improvement compared to previous years. 

In 2021, the percentage of births registered within the prescribed 21-day limit in Nagaland stood at just 1.9 %, while it was 1.7 % in 2020.

Nationally, Puducherry and Gujarat reported the highest rate of birth registrations within 21 days at 99.8 %, followed by Lakshadweep at 99.2 % and Chandigarh at 99 %.

Alongside Nagaland at the bottom of the list were Arunachal Pradesh with 5.5 % and Manipur at 20.2 %.

Overall, 13 States and Union Territories (UTs) have achieved more than 90 % birth registration within the prescribed 21-day time limit. Four states fall in the category of more than 80 to 90 %, 14 states and UTs are in the range of more than 50 to 80 %, while the remaining four are below 50 %.

In terms of death registrations, Nagaland ranks as the second lowest performer. Of the total 3824 deaths recorded in the state, only 1173 or 30.7 % were registered within 21 days, while 1546 were registered after one year. 

Excluding registrations done after a year, the figure stood at 2278.

This represents a slight decline compared to previous years, when timely death registration stood at 35.9 % in 2021 and 33.8 % in 2020.

Arunachal Pradesh had the lowest rate of timely death registration at 15.4 %, followed by Kerala at 30.7 %. Chandigarh recorded the highest rate at 98 %, followed by Punjab (96.6 %) and Lakshadweep (95.8 %).

Overall, nine States and UTs achieved more than 90 % death registration within the prescribed 21-day limit. Others fall into the category of 80 to 90 %, while 12 States and UTs registered between 50 to 80 %.
