With the rest of the world, Nagaland observed World Environment Day in the form of mass-social activities and tree plantations in various districts of the state. Joining the observance, chief minister Neiphiu Rio planted a sapling at Chiephobozou sub-division headquarters to symbolically emphasize the urgent need to maintain the ecological system and to save and preserve forests.
Addressing an impressive gathering at Chiephobozou, the chief minister made a renewed appeal to the people of Nagaland to preserve their forests and to plant more trees to save the environment. Mother Earth can satisfy man’s needs but not his greed, Rio said and warned that Global Warming is the biggest threat to humankind. He urged the people to help save the environment in their own way, pointing out that each of their contributions no matter how small, will go a long way in saving the planet.
The chief minister also made a fresh appeal to the people living in the villages to “go down to the foothills where the rivers flow” rather than live on hilltops and be deprived of water and fresh air ‘which ultimately result in diseases’. Joining the chief minister, government officials accompanying him also planted trees in solidarity and concern. Today’s programme at Chiephobozou was chaired by ADC Rovilato Mor and was attended by a large section of the area.
In Kohima town, World Environment Day was observed at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat complex in the form of a mass-social work held this morning from 6 to 8 AM. The program at the secretariat was supervised by Secretary for Home TC Sangtam and Additional Secretary of School Education, Bendang. Similar events observing the day have also been reported from the districts of the state including by the state government departments and central departments.
