Dimapur, July 27 (MExN): Twelve undertrial prisoners (UTPs) lodged in jails across Nagaland were released during the April-June quarter following recommendations of the Under Trial Review Committees (UTRCs), the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) said on Monday.
The second quarterly meetings of the UTRCs for the April-June period were conducted by the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) across the state.
According to the NSLSA, Nagaland's Central Jail and 10 district jails currently house 333 undertrial prisoners (319 male and 14 female) and 111 convicts (110 male and one female).
Of the total undertrial population, 26 prisoners were found eligible for release under various categories. The UTRCs recommended their release and directed the DLSAs to file bail or other appropriate applications through panel lawyers.
Following the grant of bail or completion of related legal procedures, 12 undertrial prisoners were subsequently released.
The authority said all inmates were represented either by legal aid counsel or private lawyers. The committees also reviewed cases requiring medical treatment, legal aid and other prisoner-related issues.
A total of 44 UTRC meetings were held across the state's districts during the quarter.
The review covered prisoners eligible for consideration under 16 categories, including those covered under Sections 436A and 436 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the corresponding provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), first-time offenders, prisoners granted bail but unable to furnish sureties, accused in compoundable offences, prisoners eligible for probation, those detained for offences carrying a maximum punishment of two years, women undertrials, elderly prisoners aged 70 years and above, sick or infirm inmates requiring specialised treatment, and other categories eligible for statutory or conditional release under existing legal provisions.
