Nagaland State “A” Chess Premier 2014 underway

A four day long 14th Nagaland State “A” Chess Premier 2014 got underway here today at Red Cross Society Conference Hall under the aegis of Nagaland Chess Association (NCA).

The tournament was formally inaugurated by Thejao Vihienuo, State Mission Director, Rashtriya Madhyamik Abhiyan, Nagaland. Speaking on the occasion, Vihienuo asserted that the game of chess is gaining popularity. He said it helps develop decision making, planning and also acts as a problem solving mechanism.

It also helps improve concentration and memory, independence and imagination as well as improving creativity in the play and also improve self- motivation and self- esteem, he added.

Today, he said, chess is finding its way in the curriculum of school education. Also lauding the efforts and initiatives of the NCA in promoting chess in the state, he encouraged the Association to take the game to the educational institutions by conducting chess tournaments at the school level and also getting women involved in the games. He was of the view that if chess is taken to the school level a lot of changes will take place in the mind of the children.

Earlier, NCA president K. Sekhamo delivered the welcome address. Special number was presented by Besuto Nienu while vote of thanks was proposed by NCA general secretary Denis Angami. Azaina Haikam compered the inaugural function. The tournament will go on till April 17.
