Nagaland suffer first defeat in Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Round 3, Plate match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020-21 resulted in defeat for Nagaland who lost to Assam by 84 runs on February 25.

Winning the toss, Assam elected to bat first on Thursday at the Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering Ground, Chennai.

Sibsankar Roy (106) and Denish Das (34) built up a crucial partnership for Assam while skipper Gokul Sharma (70) also added to the tally of 294 for Assam who were all out in 49.5 overs.

Stuart Binny struck the wicket with the first ball of the day as Assam’s Pallav Kumar Das departed. Binny went on to take one more wicket while SS Mundhe took 2 wickets and Nagaland skipper Jonathan Rongsen claimed one.

The wicket haul was led by Khrievitso Kense who continued his good form in the tournament and claimed 4 wickets on Thursday as well.

The run chase for Nagaland was cut short before the full quota of 50 overs as Nagaland was bundled out for 210 in 45.2 overs.

Chetan Bist (57) was the highest scorer as Assam’s bowlers managed to keep other batsmen in check.

SS Mundhe was restricted to 26 runs while Joshua Ben Ozukum , Hem Bahadu Chetri and Sedezhalie Rupreo could only score 25, 24 and 21 runs respectively.

Rajjakuddin Ahmed and Amlanjyoti Das took 2 wickets each. Mukhtar Hussain, Pritam, Abhilah Gogoi, Pallav Kumar Das and Gokul Sharma took a wicket each.

With Thursday’s win, Assam registered a hat-trick of wins and is at the top of the Plate group along with Uttarakhand who have also won all three of their matches. Nagaland trails the two table-toppers with eight points and will face Manipur next on February 27 at 9:00 am.
