Kohima, October 17 (MExN): In a significant development for football enthusiasts in the state, the Nagaland Super League (NSL) is gearing up for its inaugural season in 2024, featuring eight franchise teams.
The first edition will see the eight teams compete over the course of the season, and the NSL’s Governing Body will be issuing ‘Letters of Interest’ and releasing advertisements inviting potential franchise owners to participate.
The criteria for franchise ownership will be clearly outlined and will soon be released for public consumption.
These were among a number of key decisions adopted during the Governing Body Meeting (GBM) of the NSL held on October 16 to discuss the framework and launch of the league.
The meeting followed the announcement by Nagaland Chief Minister Niephiu Rio to establish a professional football league in the state during the inauguration of the 23rd Dr T Ao Inter-District Championships Trophy in Tuensang on September 17.
Several committees formed for smooth operation
The GBM also formed several committees to oversee the smooth operation of the league, ensuring that all logistical, technical, and promotional aspects are efficiently managed.
Chairing the meeting, President of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and Executive Member of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Neibu Sekhose, extended the gratitude of the football and sports fraternity to the Chief Minister and the Nagaland Government for their continued support in bringing this vision to life.
“We are committed to creating a platform that will elevate football in Nagaland and provide a stage for our local talent to shine on a national and international level,” he said.
According to a press release from the NSL Media Team, all nine members present at the GBM also reaffirmed their dedication to promoting football excellence in Nagaland.
The NSL aims to create a competitive platform for local footballers, fostering growth in the sport while also drawing attention to the rich football culture within the state, it noted.
The NFA also appealed to all sports lovers, football enthusiasts, and capable patrons to explore the possibilities of owning franchises.
“It will not only be an opportunity to own a sports brand but will become a journey where one can make contributions to the development of sports, the growth of club culture, the creation of opportunities for our youth to excel, and make Nagaland shine at the national and international level,” it added.
The new announcement came after over a decade after the short-lived NFA’s Nagaland Premier League.
