High-level security meet held; IRB deployed in Wokha's Ralan area
DIMAPUR, JULY 24 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio has convened a high-level meeting with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and other senior officials to strengthen vigilance mechanisms along the Assam-Nagaland border, amid concerns of possible illegal infiltration following the eviction drives underway in Assam.
In a post on social media platform X, Dr Rio stated, “Convened a high-level meeting with @NagalandCS, @DGP_Nagaland, and other senior officials to strengthen vigilance mechanisms along the Assam-Nagaland border. The State Govt. is actively engaging with all stakeholders to prevent illegal infiltration.”
He further informed that, “Border patrolling along the Assam-Nagaland border has been intensified. Deputy CM Shri @YanthungoPatton is personally monitoring the situation on ground. District admins and SPs in the bordering districts are working in close coordination to prevent any illegal movement.”
“The State Govt. is committed to upholding the security of its citizens and maintaining peace and stability. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure the situation remains under control and any unlawful activity is dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the Chief Minister added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton visited the Ralan area in Wokha district to assess the ground situation and address public concerns over the potential influx of illegal immigrants from Assam.
“These actions [in Assam] have caused unease among residents here who fear that such movements could lead to an influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland,” Patton stated.
He held a public meeting at Liphanyan village, where community members shared their apprehensions. “It’s important to recognise that this issue goes beyond state lines—it is a national matter,” Patton said.
To strengthen local security measures, he announced the deployment of one company of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in the Ralan area starting Wednesday. “Also, under the DAB zone, any eviction activity will be taken up jointly by the governments of Assam and Nagaland,” he said.
“We are committed to maintaining law and order while upholding the dignity and rights of every citizen. Our government will continue engaging with all stakeholders to ensure peace and security in the region,” the Deputy CM said.
He also thanked MLA Achumbemo Kikon, DC Wokha, SP Wokha, DIG Border, DIG Range, LSU President, representatives of Ralan Area Lotha Hoho and Ralan Area Students' Union, and the 7th NAP Commandant “for their presence, coordination, and support during the visit.”
In Niuland, Patton chaired a coordination meeting in the presence of MLA Kikon, with officials including the DC Niuland, Commissioner of Police Dimapur, heads of departments, Niuland Town Council councillors, student representatives, gaon buras, and public leaders.
“With concerns mounting over a possible influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland, it was heartening to see how united and vigilant people have been,” he said.
“I deeply appreciate the efforts of the District Administration, GBs, students, youth bodies, and volunteers who are maintaining round-the-clock vigilance.”
Calling Niuland a porous border area, Patton urged continued alertness. “NGOs and local leaders must remain alert and proactive—identifying and reporting any unfamiliar settlement activity within their jurisdictions,” he added.
