DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 13 (MExN): Nagaland made a good start to the Ranji Trophy 2024-2025 season, winning their first match against Arunachal Pradesh by an innings and 290 runs. Winning the toss, Nagaland elected to bat first, showcasing a formidable performance in their first innings. They declared at 509 runs for the loss of just five wickets.
Jonathan Rongsen led the charge, scoring an impressive 225 runs off 240 balls, earning him the Player of the Match award. Dega Nischal contributed significantly with a solid 149 runs from 231 balls, while Hem Bahadur Chetri remained unbeaten on 58. Amit Singh from Arunachal Pradesh was the only bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with figures of 1 for 42 in 14.2 overs.
In response, Arunachal Pradesh struggled dramatically in their first innings, bowled out for just 75 runs. The top scorer, Nabam Dol, managed only 19 runs off 70 balls as Nagaland’s Jagadeesha Suchith dominated with the ball, taking five wickets for 34 runs in 19.2 overs. Imliwati Lemtur also made an impact, securing three wickets for only 12 runs in 8 overs.
The second innings saw no improvement for Arunachal Pradesh, who were dismissed for 144 runs. Jagadeesha Suchith continued his fine form, claiming four wickets for 34 runs in 18 overs, while debutant Dib Borah impressed with a four-wicket haul, contributing significantly to Nagaland’s bowling prowess.
Jonathan Rongsen’s innings not only earned him the Player of the Match title but also marked his personal best in first-class cricket. His double century adds to his achievement of being the only Naga player to have recorded two double hundreds in first-class history.
Hem Bahadur Chetri’s steady batting provided crucial support, solidifying Nagaland’s dominant position. Meanwhile, Dib Borah’s outstanding debut performance underscores the team’s bowling depth and resilience.
