Nagaland ULB Election Commission directs DCs to appoint Returning Officers

KOHIMA, March 4 (MExN): The State Election Commission, Nagaland, has directed all the Deputy Commissioners to designate Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for the Urban Local Body elections. This was informed by the State Election Commissioner T Mhabemo Yanthan through a circular.

The directive was in view of the long delayed but anticipated elections to the 3 Municipal Councils and 36 Town Councils in the state. The elections to the ULBs in Nagaland were last held in 2004. The last bid to conduct the elections in early 2017 was met by violent protests forcing the state government to retract.

In exercise of the provisions under Rule 20 (3) and Rule 20 (4) of Nagaland Municipal Election Rules 2003, “All the Deputy Commissioners are hereby directed to designate a Returning Officer and an Assistant Returning Officer for each of the Municipal/ Town Councils in the district,” the circular said.  It added, “The names of the above Officers so designated may be furnished to the State Election Commission for approval.”
