Nagaland witnesses decline in new COVID cases over past three weeks

Recoveries outnumber detection

COVID-19 cases in Nagaland continued to drop for the third straight week after peaking at 832 cases during the last week of January. Nagaland recorded 223 new cases for the 7-day period— February 12-18, marking a 38 percent drop in detection over the past week. Three confirmed COVID deaths were reported over the week— all of which occurred in Dimapur. 

The state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme’s (IDSP weekly COVID roundup released on February 19 noted, “A decline in number of new reported cases is being observed for the past three weeks.” 

The weekly sample positivity rate declined to 4.5 percent (out of 5002 samples) from 6.5 percent the previous week. “Only Wokha district reported a weekly sample positivity rate of more than 10 percent,” the IDSP said. The positivity rate in Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Peren dropped to 4.1, 5.9, 4.5 and 1.2 percent, respectively. 

The number of hospitalisations dropped with only 11 new admissions to COVID hospitals as opposed 29 reported that past week. 

Further, COVID patients recovering far outnumbered the detection of new cases for the third consecutive week. The state recorded 405 new recoveries over the 7-day period with Dimapur reporting 254 recoveries. Kohima reported 111, Mokokchung- 14, Peren- 7, Tuensang- 6, Longleng- 5,Wokha- 4, Phek- 2, Mon & Zunheboto- 1 each. 

Vaccination
The total of vaccines administered rose to 15.22 lakh doses, including 67,363 doses administered to the 15-18 years age group. The number of people, who have received the third precautionary dose increased to 20,473. 

It added, “A data entry error from last week for doses between 15-18 year old children stands corrected.”

“Vaccines are working very well against hospitalizations and deaths, but effectiveness decreases over time. Hence, 3rd dose is recommended for those at high risk- 60 plus elderly with co-morbidities and healthcare/frontline workers after 9 months of 2nd dose,” the IDSP reiterated.   20, 20,473 473
