Over 70 women farmers from Zunheboto, Tuensang, Phek, Kohima, Kiphire, Dimapur, Wokha and Mokokchung today joined Nagaland Women Farmer's Market here at High School Junction.
It was organized by Mahila Kisan Adhikaar Manch (MAKAAM) Nagaland in commemoration with World Food Day. It aims to provide a market for women to promote local and organic food.
In today’s event, North East Network, North East Initiative Development Agency, SEWA Nagaland, Youth Action for Rural Development, Farmers Producers Organization Kohima district, Naga Indigenous Women Network, Rongmei Baptist Association, Chakhesang Women Welfare Society and Eleutheros Christian Society set up a market that provided the women farmers a direct link with consumers in Kohima.
This market was also part of recognizing the contribution of rural women in honor of the International Day for Rural Women that MAKAAM observed on October 15.
With a wide range of produce ranging from uncultivated forest greens to organically farmed vegetables to locally processed snacks, pickles and juices, the market had a pan Nagaland representation under a single roof.
Such spaces not only provide a source of livelihood to women farmers mitigating some of the risks that they would have to face as individual vendors, but also improve their access to economic, social, cultural and political rights, the organizer stated.
