Nagaland’s Combat Academy delivers knockout weekend

Vivoto Tsukru and Petevino Suokhrie win gold; Thanmi Angkang takes silver in Agrani Fight Night Amateur Tournament

DIMAPUR, APRIL 21 (MExN): Fighters from The Combat Academy, Nagaland, delivered a powerful performance at the Agrani Fight Night Amateur Tournament held in Kolkata on April 19 and 20, marking a significant showing for the state in the national mixed martial arts circuit.

Led by head coach Khriemelie Metha, the five-member team represented Nagaland with determination and skill, competing against top amateur athletes from across India. Despite a medical injury that forced bantamweight fighter Imkummendang Ozukum to withdraw just before his scheduled bout, the remaining fighters carried the academy’s banner with pride.

Featherweight fighter Vivoto Tsukru, 23, emerged as one of the tournament’s top performers. He opened with a first-round submission victory via rear-naked choke and followed up with a second-round technical knockout on Day 2. Tsukru went on to clinch the gold medal in the featherweight category, cementing his status as a rising talent.

In the female flyweight division, 22-year-old Petevino Suokhrie secured a gold medal with a clinical technical knockout win, landing a decisive cross to the body in her bout. Her sharp striking and composure in the cage made a lasting impression.

Flyweight competitor Thanmi Angkang, 29, demonstrated impressive grappling, winning his opening bout by rear-naked choke. He advanced to the finals, where he fought a close match and earned a silver medal.

Bantamweight fighter Wungvamsem Raman showed promise but was unable to progress beyond the early rounds.

Speaking after the tournament, Victor Angami, Manager of The Combat Academy, praised the fighters’ performances and highlighted the growing presence of Nagaland in India’s mixed martial arts scene. “Our athletes continue to prove that talent from the Northeast is a force to be reckoned with,” he said.

The Combat Academy, known for its disciplined training programs, continues to develop elite martial artists and has become a key player in nurturing combat sports in the region.
