Nagaland’s potential for rubber cultivation

Nagaland has an excellent prospect for cultivation of rubber in view of the high global demand for natural rubber. The whole of the north east including Nagaland has potential areas for rubber, as traditional rubber growing areas are saturated for expansion.

Other advantages according to State Department of Land Resources include; favorable agro-climatic factors, high yield and superior quality of latex, acceptability and high demand for rubber cultivation, viable alternative to jhuming, vast areas suitable for rubber, generation of gainful income and employment opportunities. The department also added that it would contribute significantly to the state’s GDP.

Under the department’s initiative, about 9000 hectares have so far been developed in Nagaland with funds pooled from the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) and negotiated loans under the state plan.

During the period 2012-13, with the fund provided by NABARD under RIDF-XI, an area of 750 hectares has been brought under plantation at the cost of Rs. 400.00 lakhs in Mokokchung, Wokha, Dimapur, Longleng, Mon and Peren district, according to the annual administrative report of the department.
