Nagas are people demanding their own rights: Wangyuh

Dimapur, April 30 (MExN): The lone Member of Parliament from Nagaland, W Wangyuh Konyak told in the parliament on April 28 that the Nagas are just people who are demanding their own right and that they are not terrorists or extremists or naxalites.

The Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland while justifying the struggle launched by the Nagas, said that there are three groups in the country; terrorists, extremists or naxalites and people who are demanding for their own rights. Wangyuh said that “Nagaland should not be categorized under the category of extremists or naxalites or terrorists because this demand has been there since 1932, that is, before India attained its independence”. In this regards, Wangyuh requested the Indian Home Minister to ‘differentiate’ between terrorists, naxalites, extremists and the people who demand their rights.

Taking a dig at the slow pace of the Naga talks, Wangyuh expressed his apprehension that the Indian government is taking the Nagas as second class citizens.

“Talks have been continuing since 1997 between the government of India and NSCN (IM) and NSCN (K), but there no result is seen. I am not blaming the present home Minister alone. I believe that the government of India is taking us as second class citizens, and they are looking into our case very seriously,” said Wangyuh.

Saying that the parliament is the biggest and the highest forum in the country from where the government is run, the Naga representative to the Lok Sabha said opined that the Government and the minister should come forward with open mind and find some solution to this problem. Wangyuh also said that due to the lingering problem of the Naga political imbroglio, the problem has spread to other states like a wild fire, and cited the problem in Arunachal Pradesh as an instance. In this connection, Wangyuh requested the Indian Home Minister and the government of India to differentiate the Nagaland case from others deal with it in a serious manner.
