Kohima (MExN): Given proper guidelines and assistance to Naga carpenters, it would not be difficult for them to compete with the country’s top craftsmen. This was asserted at the Two Day State Level Carpentry Instructors Seminar Cum Workshop which concluded here today at the Industrial Training Institute.
A chair, specially made for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit to Nagaland in 2003 revealed the skills of the Naga carpenters, observed an official from the Education department. Most of the participants felt that if proper attention is given by the Government by providing all kinds of tools, Carpentry industry would generate sufficient self employment opportunities to many people. Sakumoa, carpentry instructor from GHSSN Mokokchung regretted that he had not received any benefit from this programme, saying that he had been teaching carpentry to students since 1968. He expressed surprise as to how the old course was still in use. He told The Morung Express that the department should take due care in updating the courses.
The Deputy Director School Education Lecho Krocha chaired the valedictory function. He called upon instructors to teach students in proper manner so that students would take up carpentry as a source of livelihood in future. Deputy Director Vikepelhou Meyase distributed certificates to all the participants. Altogether 252 carpentry instructor in the state participated in the seminar.
