National Lok Adalat: Cases worth over Rs. 1.31 crore settled

Kohima, August 13 (MExN): National Lok Adalat (People’s Court) was observed today across Nagaland in all the District Headquarters under the supervision of the respective District Legal Services Authorities. Cases were dealt on banking matters, u/s 138 NI Act and Recovery suits and others, according to a press release from Nagaland State Legal Services Authority.

  A total of 442 cases were taken up for settlement, among which 94 cases, mostly at pre-litigative stage, were disposed off on an immediate basis. The total settlement amount involved in the disposed cases was Rs. 1,31,65,584/- (Rupees one crore thirty one lakhs five hundred eighty four).   The Lok Adalat sittings and proceedings were done to ensure speedy justice which was carried out at the District Court buildings and also at suitable places arranged accordingly for convenience, the release said. In some cases, the proceedings were conducted in local dialects for the illiterates, it added. The District & Sessions Judge, Chief Judicial  and Civil Judges appointed as Presiding Officers were assisted by the Panel Lawyers, Retainer Lawyers, Legal Aid Counsels, social workers, Police personnel, bank officials and Para Legal Volunteers serving as conciliators.   Lok Adalat (The Peoples Court) is for speedy and amicable settlement of cases based on the concept of conciliated settlement of disputes. There is no further appeal once the matter is settled in Lok Adalat. Both the parties negotiate for settlement and resolve their cases on the spot and on immediate basis. The system of Lok Adalat minimizes litigation expenditure and there is no court fee in Lok Adalat. The parties can get their disputes settled fast and free of cost. The next National Lok Adalat is scheduled to be held on September 10 on Criminal Compoundable matters.
