Dimapur, September 3 (MExN): The Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) has reiterated its decision to boycott cases in which State Advocate General KN Balgopal appears, while renewing its demand for his termination from the post over a statement attributed to him during his recent submission before the Supreme Court.
As decided in the meeting held on 08.06.2026, the members of the Bar shall boycott cases in which the Advocate General, Mr. K.N. Balgopal is appearing either in virtual mode or through physical appearance,” read a resolution adopted at the NBA Executive Committee meeting on September 3.
The resolution further requested members of the Bar, including members of the Government Panel, not to aid or assist the Advocate General.
The government units were also urged to ensure that none of their members aid or assist the Advocate General in his appearances before the court.
Meanwhile, in another resolution, the NBA expressed “extreme concern” over a statement it attributed to theAdvocate General during his submissions before the Supreme Court on September 1.
As per the Association, the Advocate General stated that “Nagaland has only two types of employment one is Government job and the other is underground job.”
The submission, it claimed, was confirmed by advocates who were present during the proceedings.
The NBA described the statement as “disparaging, derogatory and demeaning to the people of the State” and contended that, by his “own conduct and utterances,” Balgopal has “lost all moral authority to be the Advocate General of the State.”
“It is shocking that the Advocate General, the Constitutional Authority representing the State and its people, should make such a malicious and irresponsible statement,” it asserted, alleging that the statement had condemned the people of Nagaland as a whole.
The Association consequently resolved to press the Chief Minister of Nagaland to forthwith terminate the engagement of the current Advocate General of the State, reiterating its earlier demand.
“The conduct is unconscionable and the people of the State must join in the demand” that the Government of Nagaland terminate his engagement forthwith, the NBA stated in the press statement issued by its president A Zhimomi and secretary S Keyho.
Earlier, the NBA had made a representation to the State Government seeking the appointment of the Advocate General of Nagaland from among members of the legal fraternity in the State.
In an update on August 31, the Association informed that the representation submitted to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on June 13 had set a three-month deadline for the government to act on the issue.
The deadline expires on September 13, 2026.
