NBSE introduces 12 additional local languages

Kohima, April 5 (MExN): The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has announced the introduction of 12 additional local languages for Class IX students from the upcoming academic session 2026.

In a circular dated April 2, all Heads of Institutions registered with the Board have been notified that the move follows an administrative approval from the Government of Nagaland’s Department of School Education, Kohima (vide letter No. DSE/Local Language/13-158-2017/1011, dated March 24, 2026), and a subsequent notification by the Directorate of School Education on March 26, 2026.

The new languages to be introduced, over and above the four existing ones, namely Ao, Lotha, Sütsa, and Tenyidie, are Chokri, Chang, Kuzhale (Khezha), Konyak, Kuki, Rengma (Nzonkhwen), Rengma (Nthenyi), Phom, Pochury, Sangtam, Yimkhiung and Zeme.

The Board informed that the implementation will be carried out in a phased manner. The prescribed textbooks for each of these languages, titled “A Comprehensive Course in (Language) for Class IX”, will be published by the respective literature boards. Syllabus and other relevant details, the NBSE added, will be uploaded soon on its official portal: nbsenl.edu.in.
