NCRB Report: Nagaland records India’s lowest accidental deaths rate in 2019

Slight increase in suicide rate

A total number of 63 accidental deaths were reported in Nagaland in 2019 according to the Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI) 2019 released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on September 1.

With this, the State had the lowest rate of accidental deaths of 2.9 while Puducherry registered the highest rate with 72.8%. The National average was 31.5%.

The report also mentioned that, while the number of accidental deaths has increased by 2.3% at national level during 2019 as compared to 2018, Nagaland has reported a decline of 26.7% as compared to 2018.

Accidental deaths were grouped into two broad categories- Deaths due to Forces of Nature and Deaths due to Other Causes.

Rate of deaths means number of accidental deaths per 1,00,000 population, according to the report.

Meanwhile, a total of 4,21,104 people died in accidents due to various causes in the country in the year 2019, revealed NCRB data.

Most cases were due to road accidents with a total of 4,37,396 leaving  4,39,262 persons injured and caused 1,54,732 deaths. 38 % of victims of road accidents were riders of two-wheelers followed by trucks, lorries, cars and buses which accounted for 14.6, 13.7 and 5.9 % of road accident deaths, respectively.

Nagaland registers 41 cases of suicides 

Meanwhile, an increase was observed in suicides in India during 2019 as compared to 2018.

A total of 1, 39,123 suicides were reported in the country during 2019, out of which Nagaland registered 41 cases. In 2018 the figure was 36, which indicated a variance of 13.9%.

Bankruptcy, marriage related, failure in examination, family problems, illness, drug abuse, love affairs, poverty, unemployment and property dispute were some of the categories in which Nagaland registered suicide cases.

In the Accidents and Suicides in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) category, 3 suicides were also reported in Nagaland.

While the National Average for suicide in 2019 was 10.4, Nagaland’s average was 1.9%.

According to NCRB, majority of the suicides were reported in Maharashtra (18,916), followed by Tamil Nadu (13,493), West Bengal (12,665), Madhya Pradesh (12,457) and Karnataka (11,288) accounting for 13.6 %, 9.7 %, 9.1 %, 9.0 % and 8.1 % of total suicides, respectively, IANS reported.

NCRB informed that it has only compiled and collated the data and presented it in the form of the report. Projected mid-year population for year 2019 as provided in the Report of the Technical Group on Population Projections (November, 2019), National Commission on Population, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on the basis of Census 2011 has been used for calculation of Death Rate in States/UTs, it added.
