Dimapur, May 12 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women has handed over to the ‘judiciary’ the April 10 reported molestation case where the president of Kohima Kyong Students’ Union was allegedly molested and an attempt to rape her, by a number of persons. Highly-placed sources in the women commission today disclosed that the case has been found to be “complicated” as well as falling within the purview of “law and order.” It was for this reason that the case was forwarded to ‘the judiciary,’ it was informed. The commission is said to be awaiting judicial consul to the case.
A member of the commission, on condition of anonymity, said the women commission recently summoned the aggrieved as well as two of the accused. “As we have received a complaint (from Kyong Students’ Union of Shillong), we called the victim and the accused,” the source disclosed. Here, apparently referring to the FIR lodged against the alleged sexual overture and the subsequent memorandum to the NSWC by the KEES, it was mentioned by the source that only two of the accused were present as ‘the third one’ was “not named”.
The ‘sitting’ is said to have been called on May 7-8. During the summoned sitting, where legal consultants were also present, the case was reviewed by the commission. The source said that the case was found to be ‘complicated’ and falling within the sphere of “law and order.” For this reason, the case was ‘forwarded to the judiciary’ to study the matter ‘as it deals with the law’.
The member said the women commission is awaiting the ‘judiciary’s’ response and would be deciding what next step would be taken. To the query if the ‘judiciary’ is statutorily obligated to apprise the commission on instances such as the April 10 Shillong case, the source replied in affirmative. “We are now waiting for the judiciary to study the case and only then we will decide what step to take,” the member said. The alleged development came to light earlier when the Kyong Students’ Union issued a statement alleging that Kohima Kyong Students Union president O Grace Ngullie was molested, and rape attempted on her in Shillong on April 10.
The KSU had named three persons for molesting and attempting to rape the Kohima KSU president. The incident is informed to have taken place at the Orchid Lake Resort at Barapani in Shillong. The Kyong Ekhae Ekhung of Shillong (Kyong Students’ Union of Shillong) then submitted a memorandum to the Nagaland State Women Commission to look into the matter.
According to press statements in the local media, the victim along with the accused were to attend a business seminar in Arunachal Pradesh and had halted at Guwahati on way where two more persons joined the two.
