The Agri & Allied Organisation of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Mokokchung Region, conducted a one-day training and workshop on Integrated Farming at the NDPP Region Office in Mokokchung on May 15.
Mangyang Jamir, President of the NDPP Mokokchung Region, delivered an exhortation encouraging youth and entrepreneurs to view agriculture as a viable and sustainable profession. He noted that the government also supports and promotes farming. Highlighting the importance of such programs, he remarked that initiatives like these help rejuvenate the party. Emphasizing the vital role of the Agri & Allied Organisation, he urged all ten Assembly constituencies to establish their own units under this wing.
The technical session was led by Lanuchuba Imchen, Inspector at the District Agriculture Office (DAO), Mokokchung, who presented a detailed overview of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS). He explained that IFS is a scientifically structured model designed to optimize land, labour, and capital by integrating various farm-based enterprises such as crops, livestock, fishery, poultry, horticulture, and agroforestry.
Lanuchuba elaborated on the core principles of IFS, which include recycling farm and animal waste within the system to ensure circular resource use; diversifying enterprises to reduce risk and enhance income; minimizing the use of chemicals to promote environmental sustainability; and maximizing yields while conserving vital resources like soil and water. He also outlined the primary objectives of IFS, such as improving farm profitability, ensuring food security, and minimizing environmental degradation. Successful integration models—such as piggery-rice-fish, agroforestry with livestock, and poultry-fish farming—were presented as examples well-suited to the local context.
In the second session, Recha Imchen, Assistant Horticulture Officer, Mokokchung, delivered a presentation on the cultivation of Pleurotus mushrooms (commonly known as Oyster mushrooms). Describing it as one of the most productive and low-cost agricultural ventures suitable for the region, he highlighted how agricultural waste can be used as the primary substrate. He provided a step-by-step explanation of the cultivation process and emphasized the economic viability of growing Pleurotus species such as P. ostreatus and P. florida.
Recha also introduced participants to the cultivation of Shiitake mushrooms, a highly valued medicinal variety. He discussed the cultivation process using tree logs, post-harvest management practices, and emphasized that Nagaland’s climate, along with the abundance of tree species like Quercus and Castanopsis, makes the region ideal for Shiitake farming.
