Dimapur, June 18 (MExN): Joining the rest of the world, the National Domestic workers Movement Nagaland region in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development and All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union celebrated International Domestic Workers Day in Assisi Auditorium on June 16.
Chief Guest of the day Sachin Jaiswal, IAS, DC, Dimapur said that the contribution made by domestic workers in homes and society need to be recognised and acknowledged. He informed that there is law in place for support and help of domestic workers. He urged domestic workers come forward and express grievences.
Advocate Priya shyam highlighted the need for dignity, respect and decent work for domestic workers. She said they should be paid just wages where their family are able to manage themselves. We gather like this to appreciate one another and stand by one another so also in our struggle for recognition and support we should be united, she said.
Sr Pramila in her welcome address said that this occasion holds great significance, as people come, together to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of domestic workers around the world. Their dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to their responsibilities ensure the smooth functioning of countless households, enabling families to thrive, she said.
She stated that the International Domestic Workers Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by domestic workers and to advocate for their rights and well-being. It is crucial that we strive to create an environment where their rights are protected, their contributions are valued, and they are provided, with fair wages, decent working conditions, and access to social protections, she said.
She added that today's gathering is a testament to the collective commitment to ensuring dignity, respect, and fairness for domestic workers. “Together, we can work towards creating a more equitable society where the invaluable contributions of domestic workers are duly acknowledged and celebrated,” Se Pramila said. The programme saw the participation of 305 participants. Gaigongliu was the compeer while Maya said the vote of thanks.
