Minister for higher & technical education Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu today said the Amity University Act has already been passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and North East Christian Bill is likely to be introduced in the coming state assembly session scheduled to be held on September 21 and 22.
“Once this bill is passed, there will be one Central University, one state university and three private universities catering to the need of our students in higher education in the state,” the minister told a seminar on “Best practices” for principals and coordinators of secular college in Nagaland here today.
The minister said at the time of attaining statehood, the state had only two colleges under Guwahati University and the first HSLC examination under the Nagaland Board of School Education took place only in 1975.
The Nagaland University came into being after the Nagaland University Act was passed by the Parliament in 1989. In 2006, two more private universities, namely the Global Open University and ICFAI University came into being. Out of these two, the Global Open University has been declared as a State University through an amendment by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2011.
