DIMAPUR, JANUARY 5 (MExN): The Northeast stands at the forefront of India’s development agenda, said BJP National Vice President M Chuba Ao, as he emphasized the region's progress under the Modi government and called for renewed focus on local issues in Nagaland.
“For too long, the Northeast was treated as a far-flung region, but today, it is central to India’s development narrative,” Ao said.
“Budgetary allocations for railway infrastructure in the Northeast have increased more than fivefold since 2014. This reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the region is no longer overlooked.”
Addressing local concerns, Ao highlighted the importance of resolving the Naga political issue in 2025 and creating better opportunities for youth. “Nagaland’s future depends on providing our young people with avenues for education and employment. With their strong foundation in English and a willingness to work hard, Naga youth have the potential to excel in ASEAN countries and even the United States,” he said.
Ao also praised the Modi government’s strides in financial inclusion and infrastructure development. “The opening of 12.5 crore bank accounts within 100 days in 2014 was a game-changer. It ensured that benefits reached individuals and families directly, especially in rural and underserved areas,” he said.
He attributed the improved economic situation in the Northeast to policies like GST and expanded revenue-sharing with states. “This has allowed for higher investments in infrastructure and welfare programs that directly benefit people in the region,” Ao said.
In reflecting on national progress, Ao paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who recently passed away. “Dr. Singh’s 1991 economic reforms were revolutionary, liberalizing India’s economy and laying the groundwork for future growth,” Ao said. “While he was a Congress leader, his contributions transcended party lines and earned respect nationwide.”
As 2025 begins, Ao expressed confidence in India’s ability to achieve inclusive growth. “There’s a collective impatience for development in the country, and this drive is pushing us to aim higher and work harder for a better future,” he said.
