Imphal: The North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF), a network of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations in the North East Region working on the issue of human rights, conflict transformation, etc. has expressed shock at the violence in Assam.
A press release from the forum’s convener U. Nobokishore condemned the killing of innocent civilians and gutting down of houses in Assam’s Kokrajhar and Baksa district on May 1 and 2 by armed groups. Stating that it was not the first time that innocent civilians were attacked, NEDF questioned the governments of India and Assam for not taking steps against the recurrence of such attacks.
NEDF appealed to the governments of India and Assam to implement a 5-point charter of demands which included action against those involved in the violence, solving the issue of illegal immigrants, repeal of AFSPA.
