NEFIS holds vigil for Moreh killing

Submits letter to President of India calling for immediate independent probe   Dimapur, June 4 (MExN):  The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) held a candle-light vigil at Arts Faculty, Delhi University condoling of “the brutal shooting of a woman,” in Moreh Town, Manipur on May 22.   NEFIS has also submitted a letter addressed to the President of India, demanding investigation of the incident by an independent probe team, the Forum Convenor Chinglen Khumukcham said in a press note.   The woman was killed by two masked men on a bike brutally near an Assam Rifles camp, in Moreh town raising the possibility of the role of its personnel, NEFIS alleged.   While the Moreh Police station has drawn up a suo moto case, the investigation into the case has proceeded no further, it added.   On May 23 and 24, two suspects were let loose without even recording their statements by the Moreh Police reportedly “on the intervention of the Commanding Officer of the 11 Assam Rifles stationed at Moreh,” it further alleged.   Consequently, in its letter, NEFIS urged the President hand over the investigation to an “independent Investigation Team” to probe the matter thoroughly in a “time bound manner, under the direct supervision” of President’ office and immediate removal of Assam Rifles stationed at Moreh.   NEFIS has also pledged to intensify movement against such killings in North-East in collusion with armed forces, in the coming days, the Forum further maintained.
