Chümoukedima, March 22 (MExN): The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) recently carried out an awareness programme and other activities at St Paul School, Akuhaito Town and Government Middle School, Rotomi village under Zunheboto district.

A press release from the institute informed that the 2nd Semester students of MSW (Master of Social Work) visited two schools on March 17 as a part of their 10-day rural camp in Rotomi Village.

During the visits, the students organized an awareness programme on health and hygiene and also conducted various interactive activities based on learning sessions, it said.

Speaking on the importance of health and hygiene, MSW student Abel Z Chophy emphasised maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as using clean water for consumption and keeping the surroundings clean, and encouraged school students to keep their hands clean by washing them properly and regularly.

Juli Zhimomi, another MSW student, took a session on career guidance where she highlighted the importance of body language, active listening skills, and confidence building to be a good public speaker.

Citing Nelson Mandela’s quotation that “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can use to change the world,” she encouraged the students to study well and make a difference in the world through their presence. As per the NEISSR’s release different types of activities and games were also carried out by the visiting MSW students with an aim to boost the confidence level of the students’ attendees as well as allow them to experience and learn new sets of skills.

The skills included socialisation, effective communication, preventing peer relationship conflict and active listening.

The visit sensitised social work trainees to have an experience in school social work intervention and altogether 142 students participated, it added.
