Nagaland Governor, La Ganesan on Wednesday termed the New Education Policy (NEP) 2023 as watershed moment in India’s education system.
Addressing the felicitation programme for toppers, rank holders and achievers of various categories of HSLC and HSSLC Examination 2023 (NBSE) at Dr Imkonglongba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Ganesan maintained that after 34 years of following the same system, significant changes to the education policy was made on July 29, 2020 with the launch of NEP 2023 which aim to raise the standard of education in India to a global level.
Sharing his observation of a pressing issue the society is currently facing right now, Ganesan pointed out that though we are producing a good number of graduates each year they are not adequately equipped to be employable in the job market.
He, however said, the NEP 2023 is expected to address this issue by making the Indian educational system more inclusive, flexible and learner-centered. The principles of NEP is to determine and nurture the child’s potential, increase the child’s reading and numeracy knowledge and also improving the child’s creativity and logical thinking, Ganesan pointed out.
He said this is envisioned to be achieved through providing flexible learning opportunities and exposing the children to a healthy mix of the best of both cultural values and modern educational practices.
Ganesan also noted that apart from the fact that a lot of hard work goes into success, parents, teachers, schools have also played a big role in nurturing and guiding the achievers.
He reminded the students that they were the future of the society and passing out with flying colours have not only affirmed their talent and potential but re-affirm their responsibility towards family, society, state and the country.
He encouraged the students to uphold a sense of responsibility as they proceed to higher studies where they will be confronted with different challenges.
"Obligations should be the cornerstone of your life and whatever you do, always remember that you carry the hopes and wishes of not only your family but the society and the state as well," Ganesan added.
Ganesan, meanwhile, said that for the past few years, we have been observing the trend of daughters out-performing the sons. "This goes to show that equal importance is given to our daughters along with our sons. This is a happy trend and it is a reflection of gender equality," he added.
The Governor also presented awards and certificates to various achievers. All together 62 HSLC/HSSLC achievers were awarded. The awards included Governor’s Awards to HSLC/ HSSLC Toppers, Achievers in MILs & Skill Education subjects, toppers of government school, toppers among Eastern Nagaland students, Governor Excellence Award for Science Study (HSSLC) and NBSE Awards to HSLC & HSSLC toppers.
