NE’s top two ‘cleanest’ towns in Manipur

Manipur earned the distinction of being the state with first and second ‘cleanest city’ in North-East as per the Swachh Survekshan 2020 announced by Union Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on August 20.

Jiribam and Wangjing Lamding Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Manipur were ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in the overall ranking of ULBs in North-East Zone based on total score.

Wangjing Lamding Nagar Panchayat bagged the North East Zone's Cleanest City - No. 2 in 2019 in Less than 1 lakh population category.  

Coming in third was Sikkim’s Singtam while Mokokchung Town in Nagaland stood fourth. 

The top-5 in North-East Zone was completed by Mizoram’s Kolasib town at number 5 . 

The Swachh Survekshan monitors the performance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched in 2014.  According to an official release, more than 1.87 crore citizen feedback received for 2020 rankings while 1.7 crore citizens registered on Swachhata App. Over 11 crore impressions were received on social media. The survey was conducted in 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 92 Ganga towns in a 28-day-Timebound Nationwide Survey.

In State-wise category, all states in North-East were slotted under the category of “with Less than 100 ULBs.” There were 14 states under this category. 

With 1222.88 points, Sikkim topped the category with overall fourth. Assam followed closely with score of 1217.78 and stood at overall fifth. 

At 9th overall, Nagaland came next with 973.11 points, followed by Manipur-947.64; Arunachal Pradesh -837.42; Tripura-833.57; Mizoram-728.21; and Meghalaya 714.08.

Among the cities in North-East with 1-10 lakh population, Sikkim’s Gangtok topped the list, followed by Kohima and Aizawl. However, cities in the region in general fared poorly in the national ranking with even the topper Gangtok ranked lowly at 319.

In cities 50K- 1 Lakh category in North-East Zone, all nine out of top-10 were from Assam, with Jorhat at top, followed respectively by Tezpur, Bongaigaon, Diphu (TC), and Dhubri to round up the top 5. Ranked 10th, Mohanpur in Tripura was the only ‘city’ outside Assam to crack into the top-10 spot. 

Mokokchung (MC) topped the list in the 25K-50K category, followed by respectively Thoubal, Hailakandi, Kakching and Silapathar (TC). Chümoukedima in Dimapur was ranked 8th in this category. 

In Zonal Ranking (Cities upto 25 K), Jiribam topped the category followed by Wangjing Lamding at 2nd and Singtam at third. Kolasib and Tripura’s Panisagar were in the 4th and 5th position respectively.
