New political party launched

Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): Ahead of the state general elections, a new party, United Naga Democratic Party (UNDP), was launched at the residence of its founding member and Advisor, TN Ngullie at Chumukedima here today. 

Launching the UNDP at a simple function, TN Ngullie who is a former state minister, regarded the occasion as ‘a moment of history’ and added that the need of the hour for the Nagas is a new party, which will work for unity and reconciliation. 

“No single political party has ever brought satisfactory unity and unifications of the Nagas” said TN Ngullie. He said that it was not an easy task to bring about unity among the Nagas, especially at the present juncture; however, he said that a sincere beginning needs to be initiated as without a beginning no target or goal can be achieved. 

About the UNDP, TN Ngullie said, “This is the only Political Party which can deliver the good to the Nagas by recognizing and putting into practices Nagas traditions, customs, cultures and its practices and usages.” In this regard, he said that the UNDP will be committed and would work ceaselessly towards a lasting solution to the vexed Naga political problem. 

The Convenor of the UNDP, O Mozamo Ngullie who is the former BJP president and who played a major role in the last state elections which saw the election of eight BJP MLAs, considered the party as a unique political party in the context of the polity of Nagaland and the Nagas in particular. 

“The UNDP is based on the democratic, traditional and cultural heritages and practices of the Nagas which has committed to work towards unity of the Nagas to contribute towards finding a permanent peace with the total cessation of violence” said Ngullie. 

One interesting aspect of the UNDP is the preservation of cultural and customary values and traditions, which is included in the preamble of the party’s constitution. In this regard, Mozamo Ngullie said, “The UNDP is the only Political Party of Nagaland which has valued the Naga customary laws and norms by inclusion into its Constitution as Articles to be made use of in the normal functioning of the party.” 

Mozamo further asserted that the UNDP is fully aware that politicians and political parties has major positive roles to play in unifying the Nagas and to usher in an era of permanent peace in the land apart from political stability to the people. The formal inauguration of the UNDP will be held at Wokha later this month.

After which the party aims to start its organizational programmes involving enrollment of primary and active members and setting up of new offices throughout the state, follwed by election of office bearers and the approval of the UNDP Constitution at a special session. 

During discussion hour with the media, the Founder of the party TN Ngullie disclosed that the party plans to contest the coming elections independently and field a maximum number of around twenty candidates. However, he confessed that the party has an open mind about forging pre-poll alliances with ‘other like-minded parties’. 

Pointing out the present DAN coalition government, the convenor of the party, Mozamo Ngullie said that given the fact about the present political scenario, he predicted that ‘coalition will not be inevitable’ in the next government also. In this connection, he said that the UNDP is not against nor support of any other political party but is neutral for now. 

When asked how they go would go about in bring about peace and unity especially among the warring underground groups, given the fact that different organisations have tried and met with little success, Mozamo said that the UNDP would play an impartial and neutral role and never hesitate to mention those thing which needs to be corrected. He said that the party would seek opinion, advice and support from the people so that unity becomes a reality.
