New road over bridge replaces level crossing at Kampur Station

New road over bridge at Kampur Station.

MALIGAON, APRIL 2 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully completed the construction of a vital new Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Bridge No. 114/A, replacing the busy Level Crossing Gate No. ST-35 in Kampur on the Guwahati - Lumding section. The ROB, inaugurated on March 30, 2025, by Assam Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, marks a significant development aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving train operations.

The replacement was necessitated due to a combination of increasing road traffic and the recent doubling of the railway line between Guwahati and Lumding. The previous level crossing, with a Traffic Vehicle Unit (TVU) of 6.70 lakh, had become a major bottleneck for both road and rail movement. As a result, Level Crossing Gate No. ST-35 has been permanently closed, leading to smoother and safer travel for local commuters and enhanced rail operations.

The new ROB stretches over 803 meters, with a viaduct length of 505 meters and a bowstring girder span of 42 meters. The 7.5-meter wide carriageway will facilitate seamless vehicular movement, addressing long-standing traffic challenges in the area. The closure of the level crossing is expected to significantly reduce delays, improve road safety, and enhance the overall efficiency of train services.

This infrastructure improvement, which comes at a cost of Rs. 64 crores, will directly benefit residents of Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient transportation route. Moreover, the move is in line with NFR’s continued efforts to upgrade regional infrastructure and improve safety standards for both rail and road traffic.

The closure of Level Crossing Gate ST-35 is expected to be a major relief for commuters and will further contribute to the region’s economic growth by ensuring smoother movement of goods and passengers.
